The 6-Figure Freelancer Podcast | Freelancing | Entrepreneurship | Clients | Finances | Motivation | Personal Development | Mindset

Nov 18, 2019

This episode was inspired by a conversation I was having with one of my friends. She is brilliant and she has an amazing business. We were talking about how to plan her exit from her 9-5 jobs so that she could go full-time in her business.

This got me thinking about the time in my life when I was going through the exact same things, and having the same questions that I’m sure most of you have as well. Today’s episode goes into my six-step checklist to ditch your job and go full-time in your freelance business.

If you’re thinking about a transition, then this is an episode you can’t afford to miss.

“When you’re a lifelong learner, there is nothing that can stop you. There’s no ceiling, there’s no limit. You can do anything and everything that you set your mind to.”

In this episode Avani talks about:

  • The fears she had around leaving her full-time job and going full-time freelance.
  • How she developed her six steps to going full-time.
  • Advice around structuring your finances so that you’re set to succeed.

1. Build career capital

Career capital are unique skillsets that set you apart from others. Use your time at your full-time job to seek out skills that you can capitalize on when you leave.

2. Start on the side and create your proof of concept

It’s crucial to use your nights and weekends to start and grow your business. You’re already pulling in a full-time income, so use the time when you’re not working to make the most of your side business. If you’re going to break out and do your own thing, you had better make sure that it works. Along with working on the side to grow your business, you need to see if it will support a full-time income.

3. Write down your vision and put a date on it

Walking away from your job is easy to say, but many don’t follow through with it. You need to write down your vision for the future and then put a date on the day you’re going to walk away from your job. Be obsessed with this date and do everything you can to make it a reality.

4. Cultivate relationships in your industry

Go crazy networking in your industry. Take people out to coffee and pick their brain. You can learn from other people’s mistakes, and there’s no reason you need to make the same mistakes yourself! They have expert insider knowledge that will help you grow.

5. Be obsessed with learning

I like to listen to podcasts by people who are doing what I’m doing. But if not that, then read books. I have a bunch of books that I think you will find valuable. Whatever helps, make sure you don’t stop learning.

6. Just do it!

Once you have the rest of your stuff done, just make sure you actually go through with it. You can do it! Don’t waste the best days of your life!
